More Than an App: Your Training Journey

Training a gundog is rarely a straight line. There are good days, frustrating days, breakthroughs, setbacks, and those moments when something you have worked on for weeks finally falls into place. The trouble is that much of that journey is easy to forget. We remember the big moments but often lose sight of the small improvements that made them possible. After trying different exercises, listening to advice, watching videos, attending classes, and reading articles, it can still be hard to answer three simple questions: where is my dog now, what should I be working on, and what should I do next?

That is why I created the Gundog Journey Companion. It is not meant to be another library of general dog-training information. It has been designed as a personal training companion for you and your own dog. The more you use it, the more useful your training record becomes.

Every dog is different. Two Labradors of the same age can have completely different strengths, weaknesses, confidence levels, and training histories. One may be naturally steady but unsure on blind retrieves, while another may have plenty of drive but struggle with heelwork. One dog may need more challenge, while another needs the same exercise broken into smaller, easier stages.

The Gundog Journey Companion is built around individual dog profiles so each dog can have a training journey that reflects who they are. Rather than treating every gundog as if it should follow the same programme, the app helps training develop around the individual dog, their history, and their needs.

Your Kennel is the central home for your dogs. If you own more than one dog, each one has their own profile, records, goals, challenges, and training history. This keeps the youngster learning basic obedience separate from the experienced dog preparing for a Working Test, so you can quickly see what is happening with each dog and continue their individual journey without confusion.

One of the most important features is the ability to record your training sessions. You can log what you worked on, what happened, what went well and where problems appeared. Over time, these individual sessions create something extremely valuable: a genuine training history. Instead of relying on memory, you begin building evidence and can look back to see how far your dog has progressed.

Nobody wants to stand in a muddy field typing a long training report into their phone. That is why the app includes voice logging. After training, you can simply talk through what happened, record the exercise, explain what your dog did well, note what went wrong and capture anything important while it is still fresh in your mind.

This is where the Gundog Journey Companion becomes very different from simply watching another training video. The Coach can use the information recorded about your dog to help you decide what to work on next. If your dog has a particular weakness, the advice should be relevant to that dog and that problem, whether the issue is holding a straight line on longer blinds, untidy delivery, or steadiness disappearing as soon as another dog starts working.

The purpose of the Coach is to help turn your training records into useful next steps, rather than leaving you wondering what exercise to do tomorrow.

Sometimes handlers do not need another hundred exercises. They need one worthwhile thing to concentrate on. Weekly Challenges give your dog a focused training objective based around their journey, encouraging consistency while helping prevent one of the most common training problems: trying to fix everything at once.

You can create goals for individual dogs and use them to give your training direction. A goal might be to improve heelwork around other dogs, increase blind retrieves to one hundred metres, develop a reliable stop whistle at distance, prepare for a Novice Working Test, or become ready for a first shoot day.

Goals can be updated as your dog’s training changes, allowing them to become living objectives rather than something you write once and forget. Training then starts to have a purpose: set a goal, train towards it, record what happened, review the result, adjust the plan, and keep making progress.

One of the difficulties with dog training is that improvement can happen so gradually that we do not always notice it. The Gundog Journey Companion helps make progress more visible by turning training records, improving skills, consistency and completed activities into a clearer picture of the work you have actually put in.

Progress is not always about winning a competition or completing a 150-metre blind. Sometimes it is a quicker sit, a straighter return, five more metres of confidence, a calmer wait, or a better delivery. Those small improvements are how trained dogs are built.

The Companion supports users through the different stages and areas of gundog training, from puppy development, socialisation, heelwork, recall and the stop whistle, through to steadiness, retrieving, marks, memory retrieves, blind retrieves, directional handling, hunting, and water work. It can also support class preparation, Working Test preparation, Field Trial development and shoot-day preparation.

The aim is not simply to tell you what an exercise is. It is to help you understand where that exercise belongs within your dog’s wider development, so each part of training feels connected rather than isolated.

The app also provides access to a growing collection of training knowledge and articles, helping users explore the reasoning behind training rather than simply following instructions. It can help answer questions such as why an exercise failed, why a dog lost confidence, or why heelwork disappears when excitement increases.

Understanding why something happens is often far more useful than simply being told what command to give. Instead of scrolling endlessly through unrelated material, the Companion can help users find information relevant to the problem they are dealing with, whether that is stop whistles, blind retrieves, steadiness, heelwork, water, hunting, Working Tests, puppies, delivery problems, or handling. The idea is simple: spend less time searching and more time training.

Training improves when it becomes consistent. The Day Planner helps users decide when they are actually going to train, rather than relying on the thought that they will do something when they get time. Training sessions and other activities can be planned around individual dogs, helping users create a more structured week.

Once a session has been completed, the results can feed back into the dog’s training journey. Planning and recording therefore become part of the same process.

Training becomes even more valuable when there is something specific to prepare for. The Event Planner has been developed to support users preparing their dogs for real-world activities, including shoot days, Gundog Working Tests and Field Trials. Upcoming events can become training targets rather than simply dates in a diary.

For handlers competing in Gundog Working Tests, the planner can help organise preparation leading up to the event. Users can record details such as the test, club, venue, date, dog entered and training priorities, giving preparation a clearer structure.

Weekend events can also be accommodated properly. Where a club runs one test on Saturday and a completely different test on Sunday, each can be treated as its own event with separate exercises, preparation, results, and awards. Annual Finals that genuinely run as one competition over two days can instead be recorded as a single multi-day event. That distinction matters to people who actually compete.

For those progressing towards Field Trials, the same principle applies. The app can help connect everyday training with the requirements of the event ahead, so preparation starts earlier and weaknesses can be identified before they become a problem on the day.

A shoot day places very different demands on a dog compared with a controlled training session. Excitement, game, other dogs, guns, waiting, heelwork, steadiness, hunting and retrieving can all come together, and the experience can reveal what is working well as much as what still needs attention. By recording what happened, a shoot day becomes part of the dog’s ongoing training record rather than an isolated experience.

Training is often most effective when the owner and trainer are working from the same information. The Companion allows a logged training session to be shared with a trainer, giving them a much clearer picture of what has been happening between lessons. Instead of trying to remember the details of a problem with blinds, delivery, or steadiness, you can provide a useful record of what you have actually been doing, making face-to-face coaching more productive.

Dog training does not have to be a solitary journey. The Companion is also about creating connections between the people who are part of your dog’s development. You can share the journey with friends or trainers who have joined you on the app, celebrate progress and create accountability around the work you are doing, because sometimes the encouragement to keep going is just as important as the next exercise.

Not everybody wants the same thing from their dog. Some people simply want a well-trained gundog breed that is enjoyable to live with. Others want a capable picking-up or beating dog, regular shoot-day companion, Working Test prospect or Field Trial dog. The point is that the journey should reflect your own dog, your own ambition, and your own goals.

There are already gundog-training services built primarily around large libraries of instructional videos, and those videos can be extremely useful. However, a video does not automatically know what happened when your dog attempted an exercise yesterday. It does not know if your dog consistently drifts right on a 100-metre blind, what your next Working Test is, or what your trainer told you last week. The Companion helps connect that general training knowledge with the reality of your own dog’s progress.

The Gundog Journey Companion has not been created because technology should replace dog trainers. Quite the opposite. No app can stand beside you in a field and see everything an experienced trainer sees. Technology should support good training, not pretend to replace it. The Companion is there between lessons, between workshops and between those important conversations with your trainer, helping you record, remember, plan, reflect and make better use of the training you are already doing.

Imagine using the Companion consistently for twelve months. You would no longer simply have a dog that is twelve months further into its training. You would have a detailed record of training sessions, goals, challenges, observations, progress, problems, and breakthroughs. That becomes your dog’s training story. When something goes wrong, you have something to look back on; when things go brilliantly, you can see how you got there.

The Gundog Journey Companion is designed to evolve. New planning tools, coaching improvements, training resources, and features can continue to be added as users explain what would genuinely make their training easier and more productive. The aim is not to add features simply because they sound impressive, but to build tools that make sense when somebody is standing in a field with a dog and asking what they should work on today.

Ultimately, the Gundog Journey Companion is built around a simple belief: great dogs are not created by one brilliant training session. They are created through hundreds of small decisions, repetitions, corrections, successes, and lessons. The app helps you capture those moments and turn them into a journey you can actually see.

Whether you are starting with a puppy, developing your first gundog, preparing for a shoot day, entering Working Tests, progressing towards Field Trials or simply trying to create a better-trained companion, the aim remains the same: to give your training structure, understand your dog, measure your progress and know what to work on next.
