Mark with a Distraction Blind

This drill is incredibly easy to set up, but don't let its simplicity fool you. It is one of the most effective exercises you can use to teach your dog to stay locked onto the mark.

Stop to Shot

Teaching your dog to stop to shot is an essential part of gundog training, both for working in the field and for taking part in tests. A reliable stop to shot demonstrates steadiness, self-control, and obedience, ensuring your dog remains calm and responsive when game is flushed or a shot is fired. It is a fundamental skill that helps create a safe, effective, and well-disciplined working partnership between dog and handler.

Running In v.s Creeping Forward

Running in and creeping forward are different problems, but both can slow a dog's progress in the same way, they break the line you want and put the dog ahead of you before it has learned steadiness. Running in usually shows up as a burst of speed, while creeping forward is a slow slide that can look harmless until it becomes a habit.

Long Blinds

Challenging your dog with different types of retrieves is what keeps your training interesting and rewarding. By varying the distances, terrain, and level of difficulty, you keep your dog mentally engaged and eager to learn. This variety not only prevents boredom, but also helps build confidence, sharpen focus, and strengthen the bond between you and your dog as you work together through new tasks.

Long Retrieve

Standard gundog drills are invaluable for building strong foundations, but if training becomes too repetitive, it can quickly lose its appeal for both you and your dog. Once your dog has reached a solid standard, it is important to begin stretching them with new challenges and more varied exercises to keep their enthusiasm, focus, and confidence growing. This applies at every stage of training, because progress is never completely linear. If your dog finds a task too difficult or begins to strug

Casting

Casting your dog is like steering your car. Point it in the right direction, and you'll reach your destination. Get it wrong, however, and it can turn into a car crash.

Body Language

Casting isn't just about sending your dog out to retrieve. It's a skill in itself, so you need to watch their body language.

Set Up

The Gundog Club drop in class is held every two weeks on Sunday afternoon and is by design there to offer assistance and support to both you and your dog, whether you are preparing for fieldwork or simply aiming to have a better-behaved dog.

Casting problems

My job as a trainer is to assess and work out what is working for owners and what is not working, but I also have to do that for my own dogs.

Mark & Blind

A mark and a blind are, in principle, fairly simple concepts. The real challenge isn't understanding the exercise, it's developing a dog that is willing and capable of working at increasing distances with the same confidence, accuracy, and commitment. Distance magnifies every weakness. It tests memory, trust, handling, perseverance, and the strength of your training foundations. That's what transforms a straightforward mark and blind into an advanced gundog exercise.

Blind Retrieves

Blind retrieves are one of the greatest tests of a dog's training. The dog has to trust your direction without ever having seen the retrieve fall, taking each cast with confidence and commitment.
